Based on a 15th century Russian icon. Though not included in the canonic pictorial of Mary's life, the legend of Saint Luke as the author of the first Christian icons had been developed in Byzantium during the Iconoclastic Controversy. The earliest known version of this theme in Byzantine art is a 13th century miniature in a Greek psalter preserved in the Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai.
